Florida may use $60 million to lure soccer teams
Florida lawmakers are considering whether to pay $2 million a year in order to lure Major League Soccer to the state. A state Senate panel on Tuesday approved a measure (SB 358) that would guarantee $2 million a year for the next 30 years to help pay for a soccer stadium. The move to help lure professional soccer is coming at the same time that other sports teams are also seeking state help. More from the Associated Press and TBO.com.
Miami Subs expanding to the Middle East
The New Miami Subs Grill is making its way to the Middle East. The Fort Lauderdale-based company plans to open 56 new locations in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and United Arab Emirates, the company said in a statement. A graduate of Everest University is suing the for-profit school, saying he was misled about his ability to transfer credits and has racked up $27,000 in student debt for a degree he says has "no value." More at the Orlando Sentinel.
Broward schools overpaid security firm by $129,000
The Broward school district overpaid a security firm by $129,000, according an internal audit that found the district grossly mismanaged the contract, paid unnecessary overtime and late fees, and even paid guards after the contract expired. U.S. Security Associates, Inc. was contracted in 2009 to provide security guards to various bus facilities and the district's administration building. More at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
